The €1 express pass, the Stripe page, and the button — what the panel agreed

A verdict on your three proposals (a short-window impulse pass, the "broken" Stripe checkout, and price-stating button copy), the overlooked variants, and the order to ship them in.

What the four agreed

Ship the €1 express pass — but it is not your first move, and the Stripe page is not where you are bleeding.

The pass is the right direction (it fits one-shot Google intent far better than a recurring subscription). All four converged on the same shape. But two of your beliefs need correcting, and a cheaper first door exists.

€1 24 hours one-time · non-renewing site-wide (all gazettes) wallet-first (Apple Pay / Bizum)

01 · YOUR PROPOSALSVerdict on each of your three ideas

EndorsedA short-window, impulsive €1 pass
Unanimous. This is the strongest idea because it attacks the real problem: a person who Googled one notice will not commit to a recurring subscription, but might tap €1 once. Agreed spec: €1, 24 hours, one-time (never auto-renews), valid across all gazettes. Nobody supported weekly auto-renew (see the trap below) or sub-€1 (fees eat it). It is a genuine build, so it is sequenced, not first.
Half right"The Stripe checkout page must be badly broken"
The page really is thin — the code sets no description, no custom text, no Spanish locale, no email prefill, and 2 of 17 products have empty descriptions, so a reader drops from your warm branded card onto a cold, near-bare Stripe page. Worth fixing. But the data does not support "masses bail at Stripe": only ~25 people ever reached it. The volume is lost one step earlier (see §2). Fix the page because it is cheap and correct, not because it is the main leak.
Redeploy differentlyChange the button to "Seguir leyendo (3€/mes)"
The price is already shown in the card, right above the button (the plan rows read "3€/mes" and "30€/año"). Restating it on the button is redundant. The panel would instead make the button action-first: "Suscríbete y sigue leyendo." Cheap to A/B, but do not expect it to move the number much.
AgreedLeave the €3/mo and €30/yr prices as they are
Correct call. You have one real customer at €3/mo; do not disturb the anchor. The new price is added below the existing ones, not a replacement.

02 · THE MISREADWhere the drop-off actually happens

Your instinct was that people reach the payment page and back out en masse. The funnel says the loss is almost entirely one step earlier.

97.8% of the loss is before Stripe, not on it

1,140 unique people hit the paywall. 1,115 never even clicked toward a checkout. Only ~25 reached Stripe at all — and that tiny number is polluted by your own test purchases and unmeasured (checkout_completed has never fired). So "the checkout is where they bail" is almost certainly a misattribution. The wall itself, and the ask behind it, is the leak.

You cannot read any of these experiments yet — instrument first

Before touching a price or a button: (1) fire checkout_completed server-side from the Stripe webhook, (2) exclude your own account from every funnel count, (3) tag each purchase as pass vs subscription. Ship two changes without this and you will have moved two variables and still be blind.

03 · THE PASSThe express pass, specified

The agreed shape, and the two traps to avoid.

Trap 1 — the weekly auto-renew inverts your own pricing

A €1/week auto-renewing pass is €4.33/month, which is more expensive than your €3/month plan. That trains your best prospects to overpay or churn. The pass must be one-shot and expire on its own.

Trap 2 — do not go below €1

Stripe takes about €0.25 + 1.5% per charge. The fixed fee is what kills sub-€1 prices.

€1.00

Build cost, honestly: a real time-boxed pass is a few days of backend work (a new one-time payment-mode product, a passes table with expires_at, an expiry-aware access check, and webhook fulfilment). The existing sponsor checkout already does one-time payments, so the pattern exists to copy.

04 · CHEAP WINFix the Stripe checkout page (hours, not days)

Right now the reader falls from a rich, reassuring card onto a bare Stripe page. Closing that gap is a small change in one adapter plus two dashboard edits. Do it regardless of the pass.

05 · OVERLOOKEDOther variants you asked us to surface

Ranked by leverage-per-effort. The top two are cheaper than the pass and aim at the real leak.

1

"Primer mes a 1€" — an intro coupon on the existing subscription

A Stripe coupon that makes the first month €1, then €3/mo. Near-zero build (no new entitlement model), gives you the same impulse anchor and recurring revenue. John's pick to test before building the pass.

Cheapest recurring-revenue door
2

Soft-wall: let her finish the article she came for

She arrived from Google for ONE notice. Killing it mid-paragraph betrays that promise. Let her finish this one, then wall the depth (the second article, the archive, other sections). Convert on satisfaction, not hostage-taking.

UX change, reversible
3

Raise the free quota from 1 to 2–3 articles/day

Build the habit before asking for money; watch whether return-visits and paywall click-through rise. Cheap, reversible, measurable.

Config change
4

One-tap wallet button on the paywall

Surface an Apple Pay / Bizum express button on your own card, so wallet users never see the Stripe page at all. Removes the context-drop entirely for the highest-intent buyers.

Small build
5

Capture the email first, sell later

For the 1,115 who will never pay today: an "te lo guardo" / free alert or digest signup as the first conversion. Turn one anonymous visit into a relationship, then monetize the ongoing job (alerts for "your" oposición / subvención).

06 · SEQUENCEThe order to actually ship in

  1. Instrument the funnel This weekFire checkout_completed from the webhook, exclude your own subs, tag pass vs subscription. ~1 day. Nothing below is readable without it.
  2. Cheap wins together NextEnrich the Stripe page (locale, custom_text, email prefill, fill null descriptions), switch the button to "Suscríbete y sigue leyendo", and soft-wall the arrival article. Hours to a couple of days, all reversible.
  3. Test the €1 first month NextA Stripe intro coupon on the existing subscription. Validates the impulse anchor with recurring upside and no new entitlement model. Near-zero build.
  4. Build the €1 / 24h pass ThenSite-wide, one-time, expiry-aware, reusing the sponsor payment-mode pattern. Ship once the cheaper doors have shown demand. A few days + migration.
  5. Judge against a real threshold 4 weeksCall it a WIN if paywall → any-purchase rises from today's ~0.1% to ≥1% of unique paywall viewers (roughly 10+ real, non-owner purchases on current traffic).

07 · THE PANELOne line each

John · PM
Product

Pass is fine but aimed one step past the leak. Ship a "primer mes a 1€" coupon first. Pass: €1, 24h, one-time, site-wide.

Sally · UX
Experience

The bare Stripe page is a real emotional drop — fix continuity. But don't hard-gate the article she came for: soft-wall the depth. Button: action-first, not price-restating.

🏗️
Winston · Architect
Feasibility

Cost asymmetry dictates order: checkout enrichment is hours, the pass is days + a migration. Instrument first. One-time payment, a passes table, never auto-renew.

📊
Mary · Analyst
Data

"Checkout is broken" is misattribution — 97.8% is lost before Stripe. €1 is the fee floor. Win = ≥1% of paywall viewers buying within 4 weeks.
